CANCER is, 'purely man-made'

Cancer is a man-made disease fueled by the excesses of modern life, a study of ancient remains has found.
Tumors were rare until recent times when pollution and poor diet became issues, the review of mummies, fossils and classical literature found.
A greater understanding of its origins could lead to treatments for the disease, which claims more than 150,000 lives a year in the UK.

Veterans Agency Eases Penalties
On Medical Marijuana
July 24, 2010 | 8:02 pm
The U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs is changing a rule that penalizes veterans using medical marijuana in the 14 states where the practice is legal, according to a departmental directive.
The change, which had been sought by some veteran groups, will prevent veterans who are prescribed and using medical marijuana in those states from losing government benefits.
The new rule does not permit VA physicians to prescribe medical marijuana, for its use to be allowed in VA facilities or for VA to pay for medical marijuana.
As an illegal drug under federal law, marijuana had presented veterans and physicians prescribing it for pain relief and other conditions with potential prosecution or loss of VA benefits.
The new rule clarifies the exceptions where veterans who use Veterans Health Administration, or VHA, services can use medical marijuana in the states that allow it.
"Although patients participating in state medical marijuana programs must not be denied VHA services, modifications may need to be made in their treatment plans," the VA said.
"Decisions to modify treatment plans in those situations are best made by individual providers in partnership with their patients," the directive said.
The Department of Veteran Affairs said medical conditions associated with the use of medical marijuana include glaucoma, chemotherapy-induced nausea, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy and chronic pain.
The 14 states permitting use of medical marijuana are Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
"Veterans Affairs Department
Clarifies Medical-Marijuana Policy"
By -- The Associated Press July 24, 2010 6:04 pm
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Patients treated at Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics will be able to use medical marijuana in the 14 states where it's legal, according to new federal guidelines. The directive from the Veterans Affairs Department in the coming week is intended to clarify policy that says veterans can be denied pain medication if they use illegal drugs. Veterans groups have said for years that the rule could bar veterans from VA benefits if they were caught using medical marijuana. The new guidance does not authorize VA doctors to prescribe medical marijuana, which is considered an illegal drug under federal law. But it will now make clear that in the 14 states where state and federal law are in conflict, VA clinics will generally allow the use of medical marijuana for veterans already taking it under other clinicians.
Medical Marijuana OK
in some VA clinics

WASHINGTON - Patients treated at Veterans Affairs hospitals and clinics will be able to use medical marijuana in the 14 states where it's legal, according to new federal guidelines.
The directive from the Veterans Affairs Department in the coming week is intended to clarify current policy that says veterans can be denied pain medication if they use illegal drugs. Veterans groups have complained for years that this could bar veterans from VA benefits if they were caught using medical marijuana.
The new guidance does not authorize VA doctors to begin prescribing medical marijuana, which is considered an illegal drug under federal law. But it will now make clear that in the 14 states where state and federal law are in conflict, VA clinics generally will allow the use of medical marijuana for veterans already taking it under other clinicians.
"For years, there have been veterans coming back from the Iraq war who needed medical marijuana and had to decide whether they were willing to cut down on their VA medications," John Targowski, a legal adviser to the group Veterans for Medical Marijuana Access, which worked with the VA on the issue.
Targowski in an interview Saturday that confusion over the government's policy might have led some veterans to distrust their doctors or avoid the VA system.
Dr. Robert A. Petzel, the VA's undersecretary for health, sent a letter to Veterans for Medical Marijuana Access this month that spells out the department's policy. The guidelines will be distributed to the VA's 900 care facilities around the country in the next week.
Petzel makes clear that a VA doctor could reserve the right to modify a veteran's treatment plan if there were risks of a bad interaction with other drugs.
"If a veteran obtains and uses medical marijuana in a manner consistent with state law, testing positive for marijuana would not preclude the veteran from receiving opioids for pain management" in a VA facility, Petzel wrote. "The discretion to prescribe, or not prescribe, opioids in conjunction with medical marijuana, should be determined on clinical grounds." Opiods are narcotic painkillers, and include morphine, oxycodone and methadone.
Under the previous policy, local VA clinics in some of the 14 states, such as Michigan, had opted to allow the use of medical marijuana because there no rule explicitly prohibiting them from doing so.
According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, there are 14 states and the District of Columbia with medical marijuana laws. They are: Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington. New Jersey also recently passed a medical marijuana law, which is scheduled to be implemented next January.

This is bizarre. Did these people read the new law?
HB-1284 has no effect on individual patients and even guarantees their ability to "grow their own" even if local government bans dispensaries and growing.
On the other hand dispensaries are pretty much doomed with all the fees, approvals, and crazy hoops they now have to jump through.
Loveland (on the city web site under city council agendas) published a map showing the current dispensary locations. It looks like most of them are too close to schools, day cares, churches, and other uses that would preclude a dispensary.
I know someone that is trying to get county approval for his pre-existing dispensary. He's having a tough time even though he's not in a city or near anyone.
I have to wonder why he has to bother getting approval since the Constitution bans all "ex post facto" or "after the fact" laws. He should be "grandfathered" in, but HB-1284 doesn't allow that.
This should be a good lesson for everyone as to why government should not be allowed to "tax and regulate" things. It would be better for government to take a hands-off approach, treat us like adults, and stop stealing from everyone.
